A native of Little Rock, Rand began work in the gardening/nursery industry in 1985. Rand is an Arkansas Certified Nursery & Landscape Professional (ACNLP). Since 1994 he has worked as the owner/operator of Grand Designs. Grand Designs is a small firm of plants men & women and rocksmiths who focus on giving gardens a natural look and who specialize in native and shade gardening. Grand Designs has worked on residential and commercial jobs in Little Rock, Pine Bluff, Searcy, Conway, Rogers, Hot Springs and Arkadelphia. Rand has designed many projects but also works with several landscape architects to install their Designs.
Some Grand Designs Projects include:
- Korean War Memorial; MacArthur Park, Little Rock, Arkansas (landscaping,
brickwork)
- Historic Arkansas Museum; Little Rock, Arkansas (Multiple projects involving
landscaping and stonework, appropriate to the period.)
- Designed and installed a Japanese garden & statuary for a residence in Little Rock
- Designed a shade garden for ‘Jordan Crossing’ at the Winthrop Rockefeller Center in
Petit Jean, Arkansas. In October 2007 led 2 workshops where about 40 attendees planted the
garden he designed at Jordan’s Crossing.
- Former Judith Scherer residence; Little Rock, Arkansas (Designed and installed many different
projects including 2 large Koi ponds connected by a 90’ stream. This garden has been
featured in the ‘At Home Arkansas’ publication and has been toured by numerous
garden Clubs and was one of the gardens selected for the International Master Gardener
Convention Tours in 2007. This garden was also filmed and Rand was interviewed for P.
Allen Smith’s nationally televised gardening program.)
Grand Designs awards:
- Three ‘Environmental Awards’ from the American Horticultural Society
- The ‘Contractor’s Award of Excellence’ from the American Society of Landscape
Architects.
- Multiple awards from the Arkansas Flower & Garden Show including 2009 ‘Best in Show’, ‘Best Use
of Water’, & ‘Best Interpretation of Theme’
